Down Town Walk Around

My flight back to Portland wasn’t till 6pm out of LAX so I took the opportunity to walk around down town LA (near the Rose Bowl Media Hotel) for a couple hours and make some pictures. The sun was high and it was hot, well hot for January. I was surprised at the lack of activity in the down town area, really quiet for a Tuesday afternoon. There are lots of high rise buildings, and offices, but very few people. I even strolled across roads j-walking with ease, as there where no cars on the road. After making my first picture I decided to focus on dramatic light and strong compositions.

I took my Hasselblad and a roll of white paper down town a few weeks ago and asked people at random if I could take their Portrait. To my surprise about 80 percent of the people I approached said yes. I took one stap of each individual, with a 50mm lens, in open shade, using Fuji NeoPan 100 black and white film. The idea here is to put my subject at ease, and wait for them to give me (what I believe to be) an honest expression. Sometimes they stared into my camera for up to a minute before I took the picture. I may explore this idea more this Saturday, but in a different location.

This little town in southern Washington has klick in the name, so I figured why not take some photos of this charming little small town. It was a real nice change of pace, an exercise in slowing down. The town of 200 or so people is full of character and I plan to return when summer is in full swing. Kids where out playing and the streets. Teens out of school for the summer, basically milling around in the streets, going from house to house, with nothing much at all to do. I took two cameras with me on this trip, a Pentax k1000 (35mm) and my Hasselblad 500C (120 film).

Hasselblad 500C – my first roll

I picked up a new (used) Hasselblad 500c last week and shot my first test roll to get an idea for how the camera behaves. I didn’t have a light meter handy, and this camera doesn’t have one built in, so I was really shooting from the hip in terms of exposure, but the images turned out for the most part. I’m really enjoying this camera. It has a nice waist level viewfinder like my old Mamiya, but shoots a larger 6x6cm negative. I purchased this camera with a very nice first generation 50mm f4 Carl Zeiss Distagon lens. It has the original silver metal finish (much nicer than the later models that had many plastic parts) It uses a floating element for amazing close-up focus, and is by far one of the sharpest pieces of glass I’ve ever used. So here are a few frames from my first roll of 12.
