Anna I took a trip out to NYC and stayed with some friends for about a week recently and I did a little street shooting. I managed to pickup a nice waist-level viewfinder for my Mamiya, and a 55mm lens from the big B&H mega camera store and shot 10 rolls of Kodak 125 PX black and white film, and a couple rolls of Kodak 160 Portra NC. The new viewfinder took some getting use to. It doesn’t have a traditional prism like most SLR cameras, so everything is reversed when you look into it. I’m fascinated by the expressions on people’s faces these days, that’s what I’m looking for. And NYC was such an inviting space to photograph. I had been there once before on a short trip, but this time I really got to dig in and explore the city. It was amazing how friendly everyone was to being photographed, and with my new waist-level viewfinder I’m able to maintain conversation and eye contact while shooting. Which makes taking photographs a much more personal experience. When you look someone in the eye there is always a connected moment related to the shared human experience.
